TROUBLESHOOTING: COMMON PROBLEMS AND SOLUTIONS If you have difficulty installing or running Jungle Pinball, please read the section below before contacting our Customer Support. By checking the few items listed below, you may be able to quickly resolve any difficulty on your own. GENERAL TROUBLESHOOTING TIPS First, always verify that the CD is not smudged or scratched. Even a small smudge can cause your CD to experience problems that may lead to lockups or program errors. If you were previously able to run the program, a smudge or scratch is likely to be the source of the problem. Clean the CD with a soft, dry cloth. After cleaning the CD, try running the program again. Jungle Pinball uses black screens as transitions while the next game is loaded into memory from the CD-ROM. TROUBLESHOOTING FOR IBM/COMPATIBLE PC: (For Macintosh Troubleshooting section, please scroll further down) Problem: I can't get the music to play. Solution: Most sound cards are not set up to play music (referred to as MIDI files) unless you have a MIDI peripheral device attached to your computer. To set your sound card so that MIDI files will play without a MIDI peripheral device attached, follow the steps below. To change your MIDI settings under Windows 3.1: 1. Double-click the MIDI MAPPER icon in the Control Panel (in the Main Program Group). 2. Make sure the SETUPS OPTION button is selected. 3. Click the down arrow in the NAME list box. 4. Select a MIDI setup file. You should select either General MIDI or All FM. (Check your sound card documentation for the correct setup file.If you have the Sound Blaster 16 card select All FM.) 5. With the correct setup file selected, click the EDIT button. 6. Confirm that the correct driver is displayed for at least channels 1 through 10. (Check your sound card documentation for the correct driver name. If you have a Sound Blaster 16 sound card, each channel should be set to the Voyetra SuperSAPI FM driver). 7. Click the OK button to exit the MIDI Setup dialog box. As you exit, click the YES button to save any changes you've made or the NO button to cancel any changes. 8. Click the CLOSE button to exit the MIDI Mapper. To change your MIDI settings under Windows 95: 1. Select the START Menu. 2. Choose SETTINGS and open the CONTROL PANEL. 3. Double click the MULTIMEDIA icon and select the MIDI tab. 4. Select the MIDI setup file. (Check your sound card documentation for the correct setup file.) 5. Click the OK button and exit the Control Panel. Problem: Jungle Pinball seems to run slowly. Solution: As with any program, the speed and the smoothness of Jungle Pinball is dependent on the speed of the hardware that is running it. Hardware configurations that affect performance are: * The amount of memory and the speed of the video card * The processor type * The amount of available memory * The transfer rate of the CD-ROM drive While the minimum system configuration required on Jungle Pinball is a 486 33 MHz computer with 8MB of RAM, a video card capable of running 256 colors and a double speed CD-ROM drive, the recommended system configuration is a 486 66 MHz computer with as much as 16 MB of RAM and at least a double-speed CD-ROM drive. You may be able to improve the performance of Jungle Pinball on your computer by upgrading one or all of these elements. With a minimum system configuration, make sure no other programs such as any screen savers, anti-virus scanners, or Program Manager shells are running. If you are using Windows 3.x you should also confirm that you have a permanent swap file of 12 MB. DO NOT create or change your swap file if you have a compressed hard drive. Consult your Windows documentation for instructions regarding swap file settings. Problem: When I try to run Jungle Pinball, I get a "Not enough memory" message. Solution: On an 8 MB system running Windows 95, Jungle Pinball requires 2 to 4 MB of virtual memory. For instructions on setting virtual memory, please consult your Windows documentation. Problem: The sound and video are not synchronized properly. Solution: Make sure that you are running Jungle Pinball on a 486 33 MHz or better IBM-compatible computer with at least 8MB of RAM. Problem: The sound or video skips during the program. Solution: Make sure you have at least 8MB of RAM. Also, make sure that an expanded memory manager (such as EMM386, QEMM or 386MAX) is not reserving memory that Windows and Jungle Pinball need to run correctly. Please consult your Windows documentation for details on expanded memory manager. Problem: The program is working, but I don't hear any sound. Solution: * Verify external speakers are properly connected and the volume and power controls are appropriately set. Check your owner's manual for appropriate speaker setup. * Make sure your sound card is installed and working properly. You can check the sound from your sound board by using the Sound utility in the Control Panel. Choose one of the WAV files in the Windows directory and click Test. Check your sound card documentation to determine appropriate sound card settings. Problem: The volume is too low or too high. Solution: You can adjust the volume using the + and - keys when running Jungle Pinball or use your Windows setting found in the Control Panel. Problem: The sound breaks up or has a lot of static. Solution: You may need to change the DMA or IRQ settings on your sound card. Please check your sound card documentation for the proper settings and the procedure for changing the settings. TROUBLESHOOTING FOR MACINTOSH: Problem: Jungle Pinball seems to run slowly. Solution: Some things that might increase performance on your computer include increasing your disk cache in the Memory Control Panel to at least 128K and turning off file sharing. Also, make sure that you have turned off any performance accelerators or RAM emulators. Consult your Macintosh reference manual for further details. You also can choose to alter the performance levels of Jungle Pinball by changing your Runtime Preferences. To do this, press Command + P to pause Jungle Pinball. Then choose Runtime Preferences from the File menu. A dialog box opens displaying options for your programs. The defaults are set based on your computer's RAM and processor. The options available depend on the amount of installed RAM on your computer. For computers with 8MB of RAM, choose Regular Content for the Title Richness option. If your computer has more than 8MB of RAM, the recommended settings are Regular Content, Low Memory, and Regular Music. You may want to try different settings based on your computer's RAM and processor speed until you get the results you want. Some settings may be better for faster processors or may require more RAM. Restart your computer to have Runtime preferences take effect. You also can turn off the music in Jungle Pinball in the Options area of the desktop. Turning off the music will improve performance. Problem: Insufficient memory errors or system errors. Solution: Make sure you quit all other applications. Ensure that your computer meets the minimum system requirements and that you have at least 5.5 MB of available RAM. If you have 8 MB of RAM, you may need to turn on virtual memory to meet the required minimum of 5.5 MB of available RAM. Consult your Macintosh reference manual for further details. You can disable extensions so that the extensions will not load and use up RAM you may need to run Jungle Pinball. If you do not have an Extension Manager, drag the extensions you want to disable into a folder labeled Extensions (Disabled). If you have an Extensions Manager, use this to disable extensions you do not need or that will free up the most RAM. For Systems 7.5, the essential extensions required for Jungle Pinball are Apple CD-ROM, QuickTime, and QuickTime Power Plug. For System 7.1, the essential extensions required for Jungle Pinball are Apple CD-ROM, QuickTime, QuickTime Power Plug, and Sound Manager (version 3.0). Problem: The sound is choppy or breaks up and the animation pauses. Solution: Make sure that you are running with at least Sound Manager 3.0 (or higher). Also, make sure that your disk cache is set to at least 128K and that you have turned off virtual memory and any RAM emulators or performance accelerators that you may have installed. Restart your computer once you change any options and before playing Jungle Pinball. Consult your reference manual for further details. IV. GAME DESCRIPTION JUNGLE PINBALL This is Timon and Pumbaa's version of the classic arcade game... but you don't need any quarters! You start with five balls. These are what we call pill bugs. Launch a pill bug by holding down the ENTER key. The snake coils up tighter the longer you hold the ENTER key down. The tighter he coils, the faster your pill bug will launch. Keep the pill bug in play with the flippers, your Z and / keys. You can give the pill bug a jolt in a different direction by hitting the SPACEBAR. But, don't overdo it. You might tilt the game and then your flippers won't work. Earn more points and tries by sending the pill bug into tunnels and up ramps, hitting targets and bumpers, and even by spelling out Timon & Pumbaa's favorite phrase -- Hakuna Matata. Players: For one or two players. If you select the two player option, you and your opponent will need to take turns at the computer.
